Jake LOVES 4th of July. You'd think the boom of the fireworks would freak him out, since he's a little sensitive to noise, but he loves it. He excitement of seeing something in the sky overrides the potential scary-ness of fireworks.
We saw some fun fireworks on Saturday, the people one street over were shooting them and we stood in our driveway (ok, Jake sat on the top of my car) and watched them. Sunday we had a fight because he wanted to go out and watch for more fireworks but I had things to do, and I didn't hear many anyway. On Monday there were some AWESOME ones just one street behind us, but they started like 10 minutes after Jake had fallen asleep -- and he was such a pill that day, I was NOT waking him up!
Yesterday (the 4th) Jake and I slept in and Lou went to work. (Hey, the holiday pay is worth it.) Jake and I totally lazed around all morning -- I did a little reading and work on the computer, but mostly put in a SpongeBob Square Pants DVD for Jake and I was in and out of sleep on the couch. (Good times.) We went to my parents' house at 5 to eat. Lou and Jake were both excited that Sadie dog was there, and I was glad to get to hang out with Kathy. You'd think having my sister live nearby, we'd see each other a lot, but we don't. She lives in M'boro (for now . . . she's moving back to my parents' in the fall, long story) and she works nights, so our schedules are opposite and there's never a good time to just sit and hang out. Mostly we just see each other on holidays! And she had to work last night, so we didn't get to goof off much or play games or anything. (She DID tell me that she's finally watched all 10 seasons of Friends and she wants to play my Friends trivia game with me again, because this time she'll stand a chance. ha ha ha. Now I'm trying to get her hooked on Grey's Anatomy.)
ANYWAY, Lou took a nap after dinner because he was worn out and would be staying up past his bedtime. Jake was SO excited about the fireworks and kept telling us it was dark enough and he needed to wake up daddy. Mom and I watched a movie with Jake, then packed things they would need for their camping trip this week (barring horrid weather, mom and dad are taking Jake camping Wednesday through Saturday!) Other people in the neighborhood were already shooting off fireworks and poor Sadie hid under the couch the whole night.
Around 8:30 we all went out to sit out on the back porch in the humidity (it HAD rained a bit that evening, which was good -- it kept the grass from catching on fire!) as Lou was out in the yard lighting fireworks. Jake had a blast watching them.
The other fun thing from the night was seeing an old college classmate -- Josh Turner -- on the TV, twice! First, he was featured in Nashville's fireworks gathering down at the river (and our university got a shout-out, so that was nice), and THEN at home I was watching the tail-end of the American Celebration with the President thing, and there's Josh, shaking the president's hand! (it was pre-taped.) That was just odd. We weren't buddies or anything, but he had classical voice lessons from the same teacher right after me my sophomore, and I always told him hi as I was leaving. Weirdness.
Happy late 4th!
