P humored me yesterday and tried out my new Preschool Learning Set. She was very concerned about the mud on the boot she's pointing to. And yes, I contort down in weird positions without realizing it when I'm in teacher mode LOL.
Yesterday we spent the day with my darling new husband's family. (They are also darling.) His mom noticed my Preschool Learning Set on Facebook, and thought it would be great for her grandkids. I printed and assembled it for her, and when I brought it out to show her what was included and how to use the games, almost 3 year old P came up and said "Is this a game?" She was pretty excited.
Being that she's not yet 3, she's a little young for these activities, but I decided to try her out on them anyway. What she really wanted to do was talk about all the pictures she saw - and that's totally ok. That's one of the goals of the set - engaging your child in conversation and strenghtening little vocabularies.
Responding to a child's attention and focus is what's important here - we did 3 different sorts, and each one, after about 8 - 12 cards, I could tell I was losing her. So I would ask "Are we done with this one?" and "Do you want to see another one, or do something else?" When you talk to kids this way, they're much more likely to sit and work with you. You should never make preschool kids feel like they're being forced to sit and learn. It's all about exploration and novelty with them. This was a good intro. I guarantee she'll ask to get them out again.
