Staying awake

At some point, when the coffee stops working and you're trying REALLY hard to not fall asleep at your desk . . . you have to figure SOMETHING out.  And I have discovered that eating Hot Tamales candy will wake you right up.

Makes my stomach hurt a bit, but ya do what you have to do.  :)

Back at work

Dude, after 3 days playing with my kid, reading books, and just chilling out . . . it is stinking HARD to come back to work.  I love long weekends, but the first day back seems to require more coffee than usual.

One of the books I read over the weekend (Emily Ever After) kind of sucked (I was fooled by the cool cover), but had two good quotes that totally apply to my life at work:

"There should be a law at {work}. Everyone must act normal until ten thirty or until we've all hard two cups of coffee, whichever comes first."

"I don't mind the work so much, but I'm just about up to my limit with people. I'm out of relationship energy. I can't be both pleasant and do my job this morning, so I've decided to just do my job."

heh.

Sick Jake

Lou dropped Jake off at mom's this morning, and told me I should leave early since traffic is big time blocked on I-24 today.  So I left early, but it still took me over an hour to get here (usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.)  I was here about 5 minutes when my mom called and said that Jake had puked, majorly.  'Doh!

Normally, it wouldn't be an issue, but mom is leaving for Indiana this afternoon to visit Kathy, and was needing to go shopping and running around a bit first.  Of course she can't do that with a sick Jake.  So I'm leaving work at noon to get Jake so mom can actually get out of town at a decent hour.

I'm usually more than happy to take time off work, but I have SO much to do and was hoping to get myself totally caught up today.  Ah, well.  We can't have our way all the time.  :)

Holy cow

Work is crazy this week.  Like, crazy.  No time for posts.  But wanted to say hi!

Crunch time

Move-in day is Saturday.  Some students are already trickling in.  Lou and I have to do RA training tomorrow to tell them what they need to know about our departments.  I had like 30 work requests waiting for me this morning.  Soon there will be no decent parking on campus.

Good times.

You're weird

Lou just called me with a request from his department, and I told him he needed to e-mail it to me so I had a written record of the request.  His reply?

"Ok. I will inscribe it in a stone tablet and send it via a turtle."

he's a little odd, eh?

Computer challenged

Question: if you get an e-mail at work, and the issue at hand happens to fall under the duties of someone in the next room . . . does it seem a little silly to hand-write the information on a post-it -- including the sender's e-mail addy -- and then walk it over to that person?

I'm so perplexed, I don't have the words to ask her why she didn't push the "forward" button.

Bwah ha ha

It's a running joke/gripe around here that I'm the only person in our building without walls or an office.  As the receptionist, I have to be in the hallway.  Sucks, but I live with it.  Today we had little cones sitting on my desk, that an athletic team had left in one of the vans we let students check out.  Anyway, assistant director boss dude saw them sitting there and asked what they were.  Then he said we should use them to "partition" me off an office.  He got up and put them all around my area and said "Wait, it's not finished yet."  He went to his office and came back with a piece of paper he had written on in marker.  It says "Jenny's new office.  Please do not disturb.  Thanks.  Management."

Now I kind of don't want that athletic team to come get the cones.  I kind of like my new office.  heh.

It's too early

I had a phone message from a student this morning about her dishwasher.  When I went to write up the request, this is what it said:

dishwasher smokes when turned on

And then I re-read it, and realized that anyone with a dirty mind would take that somewhere else . . . so I had to try again.

when the dishwasher runs, smoke comes out of it

That can't be taken out of context much, can it?  (Although I AM picturing a dishwasher with arms and legs in running shorts and a headband, running down the street with smoke billowing out of the top.)

Yeah, I have problems.
