Thoughts on the writer's strike

Has anyone else realized this is going to affect them?  I mean, after this week, there are no new Office episodes.  This is a big deal, people!  And it doesn't stop there.  One by one, all the great scripted shows we love will fall by the wayside until the network execs get their heads out of their butts.

Michael Shur, who guests sometimes as Dwight's cousin Mose on the office, wrote an awesome commentary about it all.  Read it here.

After you read that, write letters to execs of all networks you have favorite shows on, and tell them you are not turning your TV to their channel until the writer's strike is over.  K?

Read this book

The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant.  This is the single most beautiful book I've ever read.  Years ago -- maybe 2 or 3 -- my dad handed it to me and told me I should read it.  I took it home and put it on my bookshelf.  I glanced at it several times but never picked it up to read until this week.  If you ever find yourself with the chance to read this book, do it.  But be prepared to be overwhelmed and moved, and for every understanding you thought had about the early books in the Old Testament to be replaced.  It's so worth it.

You're a wizard, Harry

On Tuesday night / Wednesday morning, Priscilla and I went to a 12:01 a.m. showing of the latest Harry Potter movie.  It was SO fun!  The movie was showing in like 4 of the complex's 16 theaters, and everyone with HP tickets was having to run around from theater to theater, trying to find seats.  It was pretty funny.

I haven't read any of the books yet, I'm going to wait until Jake is older and we'll do it together. Lou has read the books and refuses to watch the movies -- he thinks the way I'm doing it is sacrilegde. (Also, I'm going to wait to buy the movies until they're all out and I'm sure there'll be a cool boxed set -- like there was with the Friends DVDs and that awesome box, which P and I think is SO unfair to the fans who were buying the seasons as they came out.  But WHATEVER.)

Wait, what was I talking about?

Priscilla has read all the books and I had to keep asking her what was going on. The movie did feel really disjointed to me, like they were jumping around too much, but I still really enjoyed it. I loved seeing how grown up the kids all looked -- and we had just watched the first movie before we left, so it was a huge difference.

I was glad it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, I don't do well with scary. LOL.  If you're wondering, I personally think the 8 to 10 year old crowd could handle it if they're not super-easily freaked out. And I was glad the movie ended on a fairly happy note (instead of all dark and twisty. LOL.)  It started out pretty dark and twisty, and I commented to P that J.K. Rowlings sure writes everyone awfully angsty.  Yes, that's a word.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next 2 movies and to finding out what happens in the 7th book.

I remember seeing this movie (several times) with my sister Kathy.  It never dawned on me that it was Katherine Heigl.  wow.

Melinda!

Melinda was just on campus!  Woo hoo!  They were here taping her homecoming segment for the show.  How funny is this -- we up and named the circle drive that runs through central campus "Doolittle Way."  hee.  Here are some pictures.   It was totally crazy.

seriously, that was insanity.  But good PR for the university, so it's all good.  hee.  (And YES, it was awesome to see her again . . . even from a distance.)
